However, Due to global warming it has been receding since 1780, although studies show its retreat quickened after 1971. Over the last 25 years, Gangotri glacier has retreated more than 850 meters, with a recession of 76 meters from 1996 to 1999 alone

We don't need to do much to clean Ganga, if we follow the following steps.
Do not use soap Do not use soap if you are having a bath in Ganga.
Do not wash clothes Do not wash clothes and vehicles near the bank of ganga. It harms the ecology and pollutes the river
Do not throw Garbage in Ganga Any garbage should be disposed off in the dustbin and not in the ganga.
Do not spit, urinate, fecate Avoid any such actions
Respect Ganga If you are not religious or spiritual, still it is a river which supports millions of people.
Report Illegal sand Mining If you encounter any illegal sand mining near banks of ganga , do report to the nearest officials.
Educate Others Educate your friends and family members, for what they should do and more importantly, what they should not.
Remove any stray materials Try to remove any stray materials from the river and dispose them
Participate In the river cleaning events held time to time at various ghats of river Ganga
