According to Hindu calendar the thirteenth lunar night / fourteenth; lunar day (Thithi / lunar day = Thriyodasi night / Chaturdasi Day) the waning phase of the moon (Krishna Paksha) is marked as ‘Mah shivratri’
Mahadev was married to Devi Parvati on Shivratri. Remember Shiva without Parvati is pure ‘Nirgun Brahman’. With his illusive power, (Maya, Parvati) He becomes the “Sagun Brahman” for the purpose of the pious devotion of his devotees.

Abhishekam
Shiva Abhishekam is usually performed to ShivLing representing his manifestation as a creator of good .
In many temples, one finds a vessel hung over the Lingam called thaara paathra, that continuously drips water or other offerings onto the Lingam in deference to Shiva’s desire for Abhisheka.

Samagri (items) Use in Abhishekam:
GanGa Jal, Honey,TenderCoconut Water, Vibhuti(holy ash), Panchamrita( based delicacy consisting of Panch(5) items: Milk, Sugar, Ghee (clarified butter), Honey, curd),Bananas, Sandalwood Paste,Ghee(Clarified Butter),Bael Leaves, Flowers, juice of sugarcane.
AAKAMDA Flowers,DHATURA Flowers,BLUE LOTUS(or Pink Lotus/White Lotus)Flowers are auspicious.
Milk, curd or Panchamrit should never be poured in utensil made of Bronze, as this is equal to poision.
